UFC Manila gets Frankie Edgar vs. Urijah Faber

In a fantastic left-field move by the UFC they have reportedly matched Urijah Faber and Frankie Edgar for the main event of the promotions debut show in the Philippines on May 16th. The fight was first reported by MMA-In-Asia.com and it is expected that the UFC will officially announce the fight shortly.

The weight class for the fight was not announced. Faber has fought between bantamweight and featherweight his entire career but has been a mainstay in the bantamweight division since 2010. Edgar is the former UFC lightweight champ but dropped down to featherweight following the loss of his title.

Faber has expressed an interest in fighting Conor McGregor who currently resides at featherweight and Frankie Edgar has expressed his determination at fighting for the featherweight title so it would be safe to assume the fight could happen at that weight. In saying that it wouldn’t be out of question for the fight be a catchweight or be Edgar’s debut as a bantamweight.

Alan’s Angle: This fight is crazy! Both fighters are in incredible form and even though their were slated to be opposing coaches on TUF I never expected this fight to happen. My money is on the fight being at featherweight because Faber is at a dead end in the bantamweight division as long as his friend TJ Dillashaw is champion. I don’t think a loss here for either fight would take away from either fighters claim for a title shot as Faber could always drop down and almost immediately challenge for the title should Dillashaw lose and Edgar has proven himself as a top fighter that it would take a couple of losses to take him out of the title picture.
