Can you say WHOA!! UFC president Dana White just made the announcement on Sport Centre that the superfight between Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz will happen on January 31st over Super Bowl weekend.
The two will be returning from lengthy, but very different, layoffs. Anderson Silva is returning from a broken leg sustained in the second loss to Chris Weidman last December while Nick Diaz has been on self imposed exile since his loss to GSP over a year ago.
Talk of when will either return have ran almost parallel with one another but the thought of both meeting in the cage seemed very farfetched and unimaginable. That was until Silva’s manager Ed Soares stated recently that is a possibility.
This was quickly followed by a more media friendly Diaz saying on a number of occasions that this is the fight he wants. Diaz has been stern on wanting fights that will provide a good payday and this will no doubt be one of them.
The fight will most likely be competed at middleweight.
Alan’s Angle: This fight is money! The UFC is onto a winner here. Both fighters are currently in strange situations where their stock is low but their names remain huge draws. There are currently very few match-ups in the UFC that would be considered a major fight but this is one of them. This is almost too perfect to comprehend from all angles: the fans, the fighters and the UFC!
