GAA president Aogan O’Fearghail says that Conor McGregor and the UFC is welcome to Croke Park should the Irishman beat Jose Aldo this July in their title fight in Las Vegas.
“Our stadium is here and available. I haven’t seen an application but every application that comes is always welcome,” Aogan O’Fearghail told The Evening Herald.
“He’s a young athlete who clearly has a world following. Certainly we need to discuss with Conor when he wants to fight and when he wants the venue.”
These comments come after UFC president revealed that the promotion will return to Ireland in 2015 and said that if Conor McGregor does win the title that his first defence will also be in Ireland.
Alan’s Angle: I believe the UFC is waiting until after July 11th before confirming anything. If McGregor wins the title then perhaps they will look at Croke Park later in 2015 and if doesn’t then they might just return to the Three Arena (formerly the O2).
The only problem there is that Ireland does have a short window of decent weather and the later in the year there is a greater chance of rain, heavy winds, freezing weather and just all-round bad weather not fit for fighting.
I still think it is all a long shot to put on an event in Croke Park in general.
