Frankie Edgar beat Cub Swanson in the main event of UFC Fight Night Austin on Saturday night and it was a display that earned him a ‘Performance of the Night’ award. Edgar was relentless throughout the contest and looked like he was en route to win a unanimous decision before pulling off a submission in the dying moments of the last round.
This was the 33-year-old’s best performance in years and silenced the critics that thought he might be past it after losing three title fights in a row in the space of 12 months. Since his loss to Jose Aldo he has now beaten Charles Oliviera, retired BJ Penn, and now just completely dominated the #2 ranked fighter in the world Cub Swanson.
Swanson was guaranteed the title shot next by Dana White had he beaten Frankie Edgar. When asked at the press conference the New Jersey native stated that he should be next in line for the title.
“Yeah it should be me,” he said. “Based on my performance, based on what I’ve done in my career, it should be me. That’s it!”
Alan’s Angle: To me it looks like the UFC will hold off until January at least before naming the number one contender. If Conor McGregor beats Dennis Siver then he should be named as the man to face Aldo next. The UFC is in a good position now that Frankie Edgar put in the performance that he did. Edgar and McGregor are both bankable options for the UFC and boy do they love having a good ‘Plan A’ and ‘Plan B’ given the past year they’ve had dealing with injuries etc.
