With his legal woes now behind him and BAMMA firmly in the rear view mirror Aaron ‘The Joker’ Chalmers has finally put pen to paper and has joined the Bellator roster going down a weight category to lightweight. It’s no secret that the recent Bellator signees will be financially rewarded for more than they would on any other European promotion. As Chalmers is keen to point out his deal is no joke as he explains, “I’ve signed the biggest deal of all the new UK MMA signings.” Continuing he said, “Bellator knew what I was worth, so now it’s time to prove it.
Whilst he negotiated his deal he has had to contend with a lot of online speculation based around the perceived inaction of recently signed talent to the roster and what this will mean for him going forward but as he is also keen to point out he was not without options going into the deal. “I’m fighting three times in USA and once in UK per year,” he explained. “I’m looking forward to fighting in January or February next and I’m asking for Corey Browning who beat Baby Slice as my next opponent. We have a list of people we want to try and make fights happen with. If Mike Jackson becomes a free agent that fight is top of my wish list!”
“If the deal with Bellator didn’t come off I would have gone into full training to win a WWE contract. Bellator has been the end goal, from when we started this journey. Scott Coker is a mastermind at building fighters and there is no one in the world the team could trust more than him to help us build, to have the taste of working with them, it would have been hard to not realise what’s happened for my career.”
Since bounding onto the scene and racking up spectacular wins Chalmers has had his fair share of supporters and to balance things out his fair share of detractors, some of which have been keen to take to the cage with him. Of all the fighters that have spoken out against him Aaron is keen to address them by name without fear or favour, “F–k Leeroy Barnes, the fat steroid infused tit! he said referring to a UK based fighter currently sitting atop 16 wins and 17 losses. Laughing Chalmers continues, “If he can make lightweight he can get this work but would need drug testing as he eats Sustanton and Deca for lunch.”
