The UFC has today announced via one of their twitter accounts that the Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum title unification fight will take place on June 13th in Mexico at UFC 188.
Cain Velasquez has not competed since his utter domination over JDS way back in October 2013. Various knee injuries has meant the 32-year-old has had to watch from the sidelines.
Velasquez was originally supposed to defend his title against Werdum at UFC 180 in the promotions debut show in Mexico but the champ suffered an injury in the weeks leading up to the fight. This forced the UFC to find a replacement, Mark Hunt, and put an interim-title on the line. Werdum then beat Hunt in the second round and captured the interim title.
In total, 37-year-old Fabricio Werdum is now 5-0 in the UFC since returning to the promotion in 2012.
Alan’s Angle: I won’t get my hopes up just yet for this fight. June is a long way away and anything can happen between now and then. Velasquez will obviously be the favourite in this fight I wouldn’t think ring rust will affect him in any shape or form. Werdum will be a tough test for him but ultimately I feel that Velasquez is just too much for anyone in the heavyweight division at the moment and for the foreseeable future.
