Cage Warriors’ Rhys McKee has signed for the UFC, making him the 96th fighter to make their way to the octagon from CW. He will make his octagon debut on fight island, stepping in to face Khamzat Chimaev on 6-days notice.
Chimaev fought last week on Wednesday nights’ card, making his debut in completely dominant fashion. The Swede defeated Wales’ John Phillips with a D’Arce choke in the second round and was one of the key talking points from the nights card. He gets the opportunity to break the record for fastest back-to-back wins when he steps into the octagon for the second time in only ten days.
Ireland’s McKee is currently on a 3-fight win streak (finishing all three) since moving up to 170 pounds where he will meet Chimaev. By signing with the UFC, he becomes the only Irishman in the promotion following the retirements of Conor McGregor and Joseph Duffy. Cage Warriors President Graham Boylan surprised McKee with the news and filmed his reaction:
McKee vs Chimaev, as reported by Niall McGrath, will open up the 7-fight main card on Saturday headlined by a middleweight contest between Liverpool’s Darren Till and Australia’s Robert Whittaker.
