In report by NBC News it was claimed that army veteran and MMA fighter Chris Mintz was shot seven times will trying to save people during the horrific Oregon shooting which has left 10 people dead, including the gunman.
Mintz’ aunt Sheila Brown told NBC of his heroics:
“He tried to protect some people,” his aunt Sheila Brown told NBC News in a telephone interview. “We were told he did heroic things to protect some people.”
Brown also spoke his injuries sustained and touched on his career in combat sports:
“He was shot in the back, abdomen and hands, and had two broken legs, she added. “We’re not sure how his legs got broken,” she said. “He was on the wrestling team and and he’s done cage-fighting so it does not surprise me that he would act heroically. It was a great, great shock … We’ve all been sitting on pins and needles and praying very hard,” Brown said, adding Mintz was “an extremely good guy.”
Sherdog list Mintz as an amateur MMA fighter with a 1-1 record but I suspect he has more fights than that as there are a couple on YouTube which are not listed on Sherdog. I am not sure of his recent status in the sport as his last fight online is from 2012. He might still be training or he might have retired from competing.
It also seems that Mintz is pulling through in hospital but will have a tough road to recovery ahead of him.
“His vital signs are OK he’s going to have to learn to walk again but he walked away with his life and that’s more than so many other people did,” Ariana Earnhardt, Chris’s cousin, told Fox News.
On a facebook page which appears to be Mintz’s a friend posted the following message on his behalf:
