The two biggest names in the welterweight division that are not in the UFC – Jon Fitch (25-6-1) and Jake Shields (29-7-1) – will fight in the World Series of Fighting’s July show in the co-main event.
It was reported by MMAJunkie.com that both fighters have verbally agreed to the bout, and it should be finalized shortly. The plans were then confirmed by WSOF President Ray Sefo.
Interestingly, Shields and Fitch seem to be on parallel paths in their careers. Back in 2003, the Ultimate Fighting Championship released Jon Fitch from his contract, even though he was still considered one of the top welterweights in the division; it was just last month that Jake Shields found himself in the same situation.
Now they find themselves in World Series of Fighting.
Nick Newell headlines the card in July.
The card, which will take place on July 5th in a yet to be announced city, will be headlined by lightweight champion Justin Gaethje defending his title against Nick Newell.
