Is Marc Diakiese the UK’s Conor McGregor?

The 18th march saw a great night of fights at London’s O2 arena. From Brad Pickett’s swan song to Jimi Manuwa picking up another win in his quest to one day becoming the light heavyweight champion.

Another notable fighter was one of the four ‘performance of the night’ winners, Marc Diakiese, who picked up a KO win over Teemu Packalen in 30 seconds of the first round.

Diakiese is now 12 – 0 – 0 in his MMA career. The 24-year-old started training in 2010 and made his debut 3 years later. In his first 2 fights, he won MMATC and Cage Kumite lightweight titles respectively. His first fight in BAMMA was in September 2014 with a win over Jefferson George. After that, he became a BAMMA regular.

The following March he defeated Jack McGann to become the BAMMA Lightweight champion, he had 2 successful defences the same year with KO’s in the first round against Rick Selverajah and Manchester’s Kane Mousah. The latter was a coming out party for Diakiese and arguably one of the most anticipated fights in recent UKMMA history. He then joined the UFC, making his debut in Manchester last year, and since has been on a roll.

To date, his 3 UFC bouts have been on the undercard, but with a performance of the night and a 30 second knockout at his last fight, plus his charisma, he is now properly standing out. Is he ready for McGregor? No, but a few fights against the more experienced fighters of the lightweight division and then who knows, he has a bit to go; but he is definitely a fighter to watch out for in the near future particularly what looks like an interesting online feud brewing between him and Paul Felder.
