Canelo vs Chavez Jr pre-fight preview

On may the 5th 1862, the Mexican Army got an unlikely victory over French Forces. In America, Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) is considered to be Mexico’s Independence day (the actual day which Mexico recognises is the 16th of September) but it’s still an important date in Mexico’s history. 155 years later which will take place this weekend, we will see another war, only this time it will be two of the best Mexican boxers in the world today.

Golden Boy promotions is set to put on a great night of boxing in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. 9 bouts have been signed to take place. Raul Curiel will make his debut and we will see 5 bouts with experienced fighters. Ronny Rios and Daniel Noriega will go at it in a Super bantamweight fight. In the middleweight Daniel Lemieux will face Marcos Reyes while in the welterweight Lucas Matthysse will take on Emmanuel Taylor.

Then in the penultimate main event, undefeated current NABF Featherweight champion Joseph Diaz will make his 5th title defense (the number keeps coming up a lot in this) against undefeated Manuel Avila. Avila has won two belts before, he’ll want to capture his third.

And then the main event. Canelo, who a lot of people dub as the next big thing in boxing, has solidified his place since picking up his only loss in his career to Floyd Mayweather Jr, since he has been unstoppable picking up wins over Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto (which was for the Ring, Lineal and WBC middleweight titles) and last September he defeated British boxer Liam Smith in the 9th round for the WBO light middleweight belt which he intends to vacate after this fight and continue with middleweight.

Chavez Jr has an impressive 50 – 2 – 1 (1) record with 32 been KO, for this fight, Chavez hired Ignacio ‘Nacho Bernstein’ who is considered by many to be one of the best boxing coaches of all time, and Angel ‘Memo’ Heredia for strength and conditioning who managed both Juan Manuel Marquez and Jorge Arce to world titles. It’s obvious Chavez is going all out for this catch weight bout.

The biggest concern about this fight is, that even though everybody wants to see the winner face Gennady Golovkin, it looks like they could face Daniel Lemieux instead as it would be an easier fight to make. Canelo/Chavez vs GGG is the fight everybody wants to see, Also Lemieux has a tough fight with Reyes on the same night. Reyes has not been beaten since July 2015 to Chavez Jr.

The fight will be on HBO, or you can view it on BT Sport this Saturday, let us know your thoughts below, on Facebook and Twitter.
