It has been announced today that Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey will return to action in August to headline UFC 190 against Bethe Correia.
The bout will take place in Rio de Janeiro and pit American Champion Rousey (11-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) against Brazilian Challenger Bethe Correia (9-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC).
Also scheduled for the card will be a rematch between Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Mauricio Rua.
Correia has called out the champion Rousey on a few occasions and has victories over two of Rousey’s teammates, Shayna Baszler and Jessamyn Duke. Following Rousey’s last victory over Cat Zingano, Rousey said that Correia would make a good next opponent.
Tony’s Thought’s:
At this time I don’t think it matters who they put in there with Rousey, the outcome is inevitable in my eyes. Ronda just seems so far ahead of all the other Bantamweight Women in terms of skills and ability that irrespective of challenger I just don’t see any of them causing much of a problem for her.
The only fight I want to see Rousey have is against Cyborg and we all know the likeliness of that one ever taking place. Cyborg won’t be able to make 135lbs and there is no way Rousey should or would go up to meet her at a higher weight. Rousey is the champ so if Cyborg wants to fight her she needs to make 135lbs.
So is Correia a credible opponent right now? Yes certainly she is. But like the rest of Rousey’s resume I just see her as another hurdle she will have to remove. I totally get from a business perspective the UFC putting a Brazilian in there for Rousey to fight in Brazil but I think unfortunately for Correia she is going to have a bad night in front of her home crowd.
