For those of you who are worrying about UFC 194, the perfect fight between McGregor and Aldo being set up, and the UFC’s lingering injury bug, that seems to bite at the most horrific momenets, the promotion has the perfect ‘Plan B’ set in place.
Former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar says that, according to Dana White, he is the number one option if either Aldo or McGregor gets injured.
“If someone gets hurt I’m the guy stepping in. And that’s from Dana White. You can print that in bold letters! I want that title. That, to me, is the most important thing. Conor may be the money fight, but when you win a title that stays with you forever. Money comes and goes. You’re a champ for the rest of your life. I did it at 155 and I want to do it at 145,” via MMA Mania.
Edgar was unlucky to not get the nod originally against McGregor at UFC 191, the promotion opted for Chad Mendes instead. With Edgar set to fight Mendes the night before UFC 194 at the TUF 22 finale it guarantees that we will have the top four featherweights on the planet all in camp and set to converge in Vegas the same week.
Fingers crossed Aldo vs. McGregor and Edgar vs. Mendes stay as is but there is some comfort in knowing there is a more than suitable contingency plan set in place.
With McGregor and Edgar being polar opposites in terms of personality the former champ recognizes what McGregor does and why he does it but says he wouldn’t lower himself to act like the Irishman.
“I have never been one to cross a line to sell fights, and I think he’s crossed a few lines, but I don’t s**t talk Conor, even though he kind of invites it himself. I carry myself with a certain class,” via MMA Mania.
