December just got a little better, folks. The night before Conor McGregor and Jose Aldo finally do battle in a title unification fight in the main event of UFC 194 we might learn who will face the winner.
MMAJunkie.com confirmed that Chad Mendes (17-3) will face Frankie Edgar (19-4-1) in the main event of the TUF 22 Finale.
Lately Frankie Edgar has been called out by a number of fighters. Max Holloway called him out after UFC Saskatoon at the weekend and before that Jeremy Stephens wanted a shot at the former lightweight champ.
Just a couple of days ago Mendes and Edgar engaged is a friendly twitter exchange both agreeing to fight one another and the UFC brass put the fight together.
Mendes is coming off his TKO loss to McGregor at UFC 189 and Edgar last fought in May dominating Mendes’ teammate Urijah Faber over five rounds.
Both men want another title shot. Edgar was hard done by not getting the call for UFC 189 when the promotion opted for Mendes instead. He has consistently stated that he could not fight and be next for the title but would rather compete.
Mendes on the other hand done very well against McGregor on the ground taking him down at will but for whatever reason, be it a short training camp or kicks received to the body, or both, his gas tank ran out towards the end of the second round. The Team Alpha Male fighter believes with a full training camp he would’ve beaten McGregor and now wants that opportunity.
I would be shocked if the winner of this fight does not get the next title shot.
