White: The Rousey/Holm Rematch Will Happen

After Holy Holm‘s devastating defeat of Ronda Rousey, speculation immediately turned to the possibility of a high-profile rematch. Speaking to ESPN, UFC president Dana White revealed that fight is already in the works.

Just as surely as night follows day, the UFC were never going to abandon their biggest cash cow, even after she was head-kicked into sweet oblivion in front of 50,000 Australians. And while immediate rematches are typically reserved for close decisions or freak knockouts, virtue is no match for avarice in the fight business, as Dana White revealed this is the fight the promotion want.

Speaking on the topic with ESPN, White revealed that- Rousey’s schedule permitting- the UFC want to get the bantamweights back in The Octagon as soon as possible:

“I think that if we didn’t make the rematch, me and [Lorenzo Fertitta] should probably lose our promoter’s license. That’s the fight that’s going to happen. That’s the fight.”

“Ronda Rousey has gone undefeated; she’s taken the sport to another level and beaten the best women in the world in 14 seconds, 30 seconds. She deserves a rematch. Holly agrees she deserves a rematch. We’ll figure it out.”

It is likely that preparation and filming of the new Roadhouse film and additional projects will take up at least six months of Rousey’s schedule, so it is safe to assume that Holm will have been offered sufficient money that it is worth her not defending her title in the intervening period.

Whether or not “Rowdy” will have grown somewhat too comfortable earning her money without the risk of finishing the night prostrate and bloodied on The Octagon floor in that time remains to be seen.
