UFC Fight Night: Waterson vs Hill – Main Card Preview

The UFC Apex in Las Vegas plays hosts to its 10th Fight Night card tonight as two former Invicta FC champions meet in the strawweight division. Contenders Michelle Waterson and Angela Hill top this evenings card while lightweight prospects Ottman Azaitar and Khama Worthy meet in the co-main event.

After losing the original main event between Glover Teixeira and Thiago Santos, due to Teixeira testing positive for COVID-19, the clash between Waterson and Hill was promoted to main event status.

Following decision defeats against Carla Esparza and Joanna Jędrzejczyk in her last two fights, Michelle Waterson (17-8) will be looking to put herself back into the strawweight title conversation with another solid performance. Currently ranked at number 8, Waterson has 12 finishes to her name including 9 submissions and 8 first-round finishes. With notable wins over Paige VanZant and Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Waterson will be keen to utilise her well-rounded style, flexibility and speed in the Octagon against another strong title contender in Angela Hill.

On what will be her fifth fight in less than a year, Angela Hill (12-8) returns to action tonight on the back of a unanimous decision defeat to Cláudia Gadelha in May this year. Ranked at number 13 in the UFC strawweight division, Hill is known for her striking ability and brings 5 KO wins to the table. With a preference for elbows in the clinch, the Alliance MMA contender specialises in Muay Thai with a 14-0 amateur record and 2-0 as a professional before focussing her attention on MMA.

In the co-main event, two surging lightweight contenders collide as Moroccan Ottman Azaitar and Khama Worthy meet in what has Fight of the Night potential written all over it. With 11 of his 12 wins coming via a finish, Ottman Azaitar (12-0) likes to get things done as his 5 wins in under 1:30 would suggest. As a freestyle fighter, Azaitar announced himself in the UFC with first-round KO debut win over Teemu Packalen at UFC 242: Khabib vs Poirier in September last year. With a clear and visible threat in his striking, Azaitar aim to remain undefeated and hand Worthy his first defeat in the Octagon.

Fighting out of Pittsburgh, Khama Worthy (16-6) fully intends to stop his third prospect in a row as he looks to make it 3-0 in the UFC. With a guillotine submission win over Luis Pena and a first-round TKO victory over Devonte Smith, Worthy is currently on a 7-fight win streak and is showing no signs of easing up in his quest to scale the lightweight rankings.

With 9 of his 16 wins coming by way of KO, Worthy has 12 finishes to his name since turning pro back in 2012. Prior to his stint in the Octagon, Worthy has faced UFC veterans Paul Felder, Kyle Nelson, Matt Bessette and Billy Quarantillo, all of which resulted in KO/TKO defeats.

Prior to the main and co-main event, top 10 flyweights Roxanne Modafferi and Andrea Lee will run it back again in a rematch after meeting back in 2014.

Ranked number 8 in the flyweight division, former title challenger Roxanne Modafferi (24-18) previously met Lee under the Invicta FC umbrella back in December 2014. On that occasion, Modafferi claimed a split decision win and will be looking to replicate the outcome when the pair meet again tonight in Las Vegas.

Turning professional close to 17 years ago, Modafferi featured on seasons 18 and 26 of The Ultimate Fighter and has picked up wins in 7 of her last 12 fights including notable wins over Maycee Barber and Antonina Shevchenko.

Currently ranked at number 9, Andrea Lee (11-4) enters the Octagon with 7 wins in her last 9 including wins over Montana De La Rosa, Ashlee-Evans Smith and Veronica Macedo to her name. With her Muay Thai and BJJ style, Lee sees herself as a complete MMA fighter as and such will be a different prospect from the fighter that met Modafferi in 2014.

Elsewhere on the main card, light heavyweight veteran Ed Herman (26-14) seeks to take out short-notice replacement Mike Rodriguez (11-4 1NC)

Bobby Green (26-10-1) incredibly competes for the third time in four months. Following unanimous decision wins over Lando Vannata and Clay Guida, Green looks to continue his win streak against Brazillian Alan Patrick (15-2) in the lightweight division.

Opening up proceedings on the main card, Dana White’s Contender Series signee Billy Quarantillo (14-2) looks to remain undefeated in the UFC when he takes on well-rounded Canadian Kyle Nelson (13-3)
