Gunner Nelson returns to the Octagon® this weekend to take on Brazilian UFC® veteran Gilbert Burns. Known for his grappling skills, Nelson has debatably the strongest grappling skillset in the welterweight division and is back with a vengeance after his competitive bout with Leon Edwards at UFC FIGHT NIGHT®: TILL vs. MASVIDAL.
Nelson’s opponent, Gilbert Burns, has stepped in on late notice and is coming off an impressive win against then undefeated Alexey Kunchenko back in August via unanimous decision. Burns has recently moved up from lightweight to welterweight and is looking to make his mark on the division.
Hermansson Headliner
As UFC hosts its first ever event in Copenhagen this weekend, Sweden native Jack Hermansson takes on Jared Cannonier in the headline bout of this weekend’s event. Middleweight athlete Hermansson is on one of the most thrilling win streaks in the middleweight division with four straight wins, defeating Ronaldo Souza via unanimous decision earlier this year. Hermansson believes a victory this weekend would give him a deserved title shot, saying “I feel like I should be next in line for the title shot.”
American mixed martial artist, Cannonier travels to enemy territory as he faces Hermansson in his native Scandinavia. Cannonier has impressed spectators since his middleweight last November, having previously competed at both heavyweight and light heavyweight in the UFC. Last May, he stopped Anderson Silva in a first round bout.
Welsh Warriors
This weekend sees a host of Welsh MMA talent enter the Octagon. Former Cage Warriors men’s bantamweight champion Jack Shore will make his eagerly-anticipated UFC debut in Copenhagen this weekend.
24-year-old Shore will become the fourth Welshman to have set foot inside the Octagon as he faces Nohelin Hernandez. Hernandez fights out of Team AKA and his teammates include current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and former champions Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez.
Also waving the Welsh flag this weekend, John Phillips takes on Alen Amedovski in a middleweight bout.
