Mayweather: McGregor Fight Could Happen!

A story in The Sun newspaper in the United Kingdom claiming Floyd Mayweather Jr was set to fight UFC Featherweight champion Conor McGregor in a boxing match. Despite denials, the retired Mayweather has suggested, “it could happen”.

A claim in British tabloid newspaper The Sun that Conor McGregor would fight the legendary Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather in a boxing match rather than compete in the UFC this year has, understandably, caused ructions in the world of MMA. UFC President flatly denied the claims describing the story as “complete fiction” and, “bottom-feeder stuff”.

However, no one has appeared to tell either of the men involved, as Mayweather refused to rule out the bout when questioned last night, and McGregor later posted a- presumably- mocked up fight poster of the two together on his twitter account.

When asked if the rumours of a face-off with an MMA fighter were true- referring to McGregor- Mayweather responded:

“It’s possible…it was a name that was shot at me…the rumors that y’all been hearing is the rumors that I started…it may not be a rumor…keep y’all fingers crossed…it may be a boxer versus an MMA fighter…”

A little later, the Irishman also seemed keen to stoke the fire as he posted this image on his twitter account:

Whether the prospect of the fight is a real one, or whether one or both men are using it as a marketing ploy is unclear at this stage. However, it is likely to be of some concern to Dana White that McGregor is once again dominating the headlines, and the UFC and their huge roster of fighters are very much in the background.
