Main Card – Middleweight Bout
Tomasz Drwal (21-5-1) vs Łukasz Bieńkowski (5-3-0)
Just a mere 1,873 days ago, Polish legend Tomasz ‘Gorilla’ Drwal made his way into the KSW cage for what would be his last fight in MMA. That is until this Saturday when after 5 years away from the sport, Drwal returns to action to face Łukasz Bieńkowski.
On that night back in May 2015, Drwal lost in dramatic fashion in the fight of the night middleweight title clash with Michał Materla. With just 4 seconds remaining in the 3rd and final round, the referee stopped the fight with Materla in a dominant position and reigning unanswered blows down on Drwal.
Now at the ripe old age of 38, Drwal returns to action with the aim of carrying out unfinished business in the middleweight division. Could we see a potential rematch with Materla or a monster clash with former champion, Mamed Khalidov? This will all depend on how Drwal fares against The Polish Wanderlei, Lukasz Bienkowski.
Unlike the main and co-main event on the aptly named KSW 53: Reborn card, there is nothing but the utmost respect between Drwal and Bienkowski. Coming into this fight with the first Polish MMA fighter to compete in the UFC, Bienkowski has suffered back-to-back decision defeats in his last two outings, both of which were on other promotions following wins at KSW 33 and 38.
With his unpredictable nature and fearless fighting style, Bienkowski will not be an easy welcome home for Drwal but with nostalgia and potential narrative a plenty, a win for the Polish MMA pioneer that is Tomasz Drwal will be the only option for many.
