The worst fears for all involved in tonight’s UFC event in Jacksonville were confirmed with news breaking that Ronaldo ‘Jacaré’ Souza and two of his cornermen have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
Understandably, his scheduled middleweight clash with Uriah Hall was immediately scrapped but questions are already being asked around the safety protocols in place for UFC 249.
Although all other fighters on tonight’s card tested negative for the deadly global virus, Jacaré disclosed upon arrival in Jacksonville on Wednesday that he had been in direct contact with a relative who might have been infected with the virus.
With his disclosure announced upon arrival, isolating Jacaré and his team as far away as possible from anyone involved had to be the only option until all tests had been carried out, however this wasn’t the case as his appearance at the weigh-ins and faceoff confirmed.
What the immediate impact will be remains to be seen but regardless, the UFC are still pushing ahead as planned for tonight’s event.
