Currently Katie Taylor is 4 – 0 – 0 in her professional career. I know she’s only getting started, however in the 60kg division in Women’s amateur boxing, she has reigned supreme, picking up Gold in almost every competition worldwide. She will be competing on the huge card in Wembley Stadium next month that is to be headlined By Joshua vs Klitschko but does not have an opponent yet, however she is Matchroom’s newest star.
The current WBA champion is Cecelia Comunales who has a record of 14 – 1 – 0; the WBO champion is Delfine Persoon who has a record of 38 – 1 – 0; the current IBF champion is Victoria Noelia Bustos who has a record of 17 – 4 – 0 and the current WBO champion is Yohana Belen Alfonzo who has a record of 16 – 2 – 0.
The argument could be made that Taylor doesn’t have as much experience as the champions on paper. But given her amateur career, she does need to be put into the conversation.
It would also be nice to see someone in boxing not rack up a 40 – 0 – 0 record where about 38 of the victories were against bums. This is a chance for Boxing to put a star who is already built put into the limelight. It’s also an opportunity for Eddie Hearn to come out of his father’s shadow and take a chance with a new star.
