Two legends of the UFC and the MMA heavyweight division are set to collide when former K-1 World Champ, Mark Hunt, meets the former UFC title holder, Frank Mir, in March, 2016.
Mark Hunt has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance since joining the UFC as part of the promotion’s buyout of PRIDE in 2007. Dismissed as a relic of a bygone era, the ‘Super Samoan’ was offered a pay-off to leave the organisation, which he declined. He then broke a limb fighting a desperately average heavyweight in Sean McCorkle on his debut in 2010, and most thought he would soon accept not being up to the level of the UFC.
Five years later, the New Zealander has not enjoyed just one comeback, but two. Despite being 41 years of age, he looked the best he ever has when demolishing Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva in their rematch in late 2015, and he now has his eyes set of the scalp of another top veteran in Frank Mir.
The former UFC heavyweight champ, Mir, was in the midst of his own comeback before he put on a distinctly ordinary performance in a decision loss to Belarusian, Andrei Arlovski. A strong finish from either man in this encounter could easily put the winner back in the mix in the perennially tight heavyweight division.
The UFC have yet to confirm the fight, but Hunt himself endorsed the date and the opponent from his own social media accounts. MMA fans of a certain vintage will regard this as a ‘must-see’ match-up, and will just waiting to see where this classic grappler/striker bout will take place.
