Fedor Negotiating With UFC

Russian fighter Fedor Emelianenko, widely regarded as the finest heavyweight in the history of mixed martial arts, has revealed he is once again in negotiations with the UFC, and that an agreement may be closer than ever.

Russian heavyweight and Sambo master Fedor Emelianenko is broadly considered to be the greatest fighter his weight-class has ever produced. During the PRIDE era he reigned supreme, racking up a huge unbeaten streak, including wins over his most gifted contemporaries, Antonio ‘Big Nog’ Noguiera and Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic.

Howeverm with the demise of the Japanese promotion, Dana White was unable to come to terms with the Russian legend, who went to first Affliction, and then Strikeforce, where he endured three consecutive losses, and retired shortly thereafter. It seemed then that a great opportunity had passed for the UFC and the sport in general.

However, the former PRIDE Champion made his comeback last year with something of a ‘gimme’ fight in Jaideep Singh for RIZIN. It was speculated he had only returned to enjoy lucrative mismatches, but it seems he is interested in competing at the top level once more.

Fedor has a fight against former UFC brawler Fabio Maldonado coming up this week, at EFN 50, but if he comes through that it seems the Russian wants to step up the competition. And, in conversation with MMA Fighting, he revealed he may, at long last, be about to make his debut in the Octagon:

“Right now, I’m much closer compared to when I just came back to MMA

“Yes, we did receive an offer. But there are some finer points that we wanted to discuss.”

“I always wanted to fight for UFC and I would fight for UFC, but at this moment we’re looking at the deal and the deal has to satisfy both parties – them and my organization.

“Until there’s no friction, until we are 100% in terms of seeing eye-to-eye, we are all basically in limbo.”

Emelianenko headlines a EFN 50 card which includes Vitaly Minakov and Englishman Jack McGann in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Friday
