This is not the event that is going to happen but it’s the event we want to happen. Here is the main card are hoping for:
(Welterweight) Robbie Lawler vs Donald Cerrone: A fight that’s already been announced and definitely one to watch. If this was for a belt, it would easily be a main event. The fact that UFC 213 is International Fight Week, the card is going to be stacked, and this bout has the potential to be fight of the night and one of the more anticipated fights on the card. Both men are 2 UFC favourites; since Cerrone came up to the welterweight division, he’s been on a 4 – 1 – 0 streak, losing his last bout to Jorge Masvidal. Lawler is a former welterweight champion and has been in wars, including 3 fight of the year accolades against Johnny Hendricks, Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit all of which happened 3 years in a row, maybe this bout could be #4.
(Light Heavyweight) Jon Jones vs Mauricio Rua: UFC 213 is scheduled to take place on the 8th of July; former champion Jon Jones’s suspension is up on the 7th of July. A lot of people want to see him face Daniel Cormier for the belt, but a lot of people believe he should face someone first to shake the cage rust away. ‘Shogun’ Rua is also a former light heavyweight champion, but his reign was cut short in first defence against Jones. Since then, Shogun has been up and down in the win/loss column, however he is currently on a 3 fight win streak and currently #4 in the light heavyweight rankings. A massive test for both men and a redemption story on both sides.
(Bantamweight) Demetrious Johnson vs Dominick Cruz: This fight is under the assumption Johnson comes up from the flyweight division, check out our 5 potential bantamweight opponents for Johnson. His last loss was against Cruz before he went down to the flyweight division and became #1 pound for pound in the sport. Cruz has had medical problems for the last 4 years but still managed to recapture his title but lost it to current champion Cody Garbrandt. A rematch between the 2 would attract great attention as both will go down as 2 of the greatest fighters to ever step into the octagon.
(Women’s Featherweight Championship) Germaine de RanDamie(c) vs Cristiane Justino: Last year, UFC 200 which was the International fight week show was meant to be main evented by a rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz; that was scrapped and changed to Daniel Cormier and a returning Jon Jones; but Jones failed a drug test. The main event ended up been Meisha Tate vs Amanda Nunes for the women’s bantamweight championship. Needless to say women’s MMA has come a long way and ‘Cyborg’ Justino and de Randamie are pioneers of the sport setting the bar for other aspiring female fighters. The featherweight division which is a new division in the sport was practically created for Cyborg, it would to see her get her shot at this event.
(Bantamweight Championship) Cody Garbrandt(c) vs T.J. Dillashaw: This is currently the main event as it stands but like all cards, they’re subject to change. Two relatively new additions to the UFC roster, Dillashaw who is former champion and the man to stop Renan Barao’s impressive streak but lost the title to Dominick Cruz. Garbrandt, who is currently undefeated and made easy work of Dominick Cruz to become the champion. Cruz wasn’t 100% when the fight took place but this is an opportunity for Garbrandt to solidify his reign as champion.
(Main Event) (Light Heavyweight Championship) Daniel Cormier(c) vs Jimi Manuwa: First of all, I want to stress, this is not favouritism towards Manuwa because he was on #WHOATV’s podcast recently. The light heavyweight division along with the welterweight and middleweight divisions are amongst the consistent hottest divisions. The best opponent for Cormier is Manuwa; Gustafsson and Teixeira are facing each other at another event soon; Jones would be occupied with Shogun; Manuwa is the best opponent for Cormier and has a lot of momentum right now and it’s also a good business opportunity for UFC considering you could make fights between Jones/Cormier down the road, including Manuwa/Shogun or Jones. It is a good opportunity to bring Manuwa into the title picture to give it a new face as opposed to always the same players.
